The central Victorian area is renowed for its rich history in gold mining, therefore it is quite common for us to have members of the public request permission* to fossick around the old abandoned goldmines / mullock heaps located on certain parcels of land owned by Hard Hill Farm in Claypit Road, Strangways.

As such, we believe it is important for visitors to be aware of the possible risks associated with fossicking in the area. These risks include;

- Mullock heaps surrounding abandoned mines may become unstable and possibly collapse.

- The soil itself may contain toxic chemicals such as arsenic and/or cyanide.

- Dangerous or sharp objects may be buried in the soil.

The link below will take you to an article published back in May 2012 by The Sydney Morning Herald, it outlines some of the risk factors that should be taken into consideration before embarking on any fossicking in the region.

* Permission must always be obtained beforehand, as no tresspassing is permitted.
